How can I restore my data from local disk-c ?

February 122010

I have XP, which crashed . so I was not able to operate my computer.
Currently I am using Ubuntu-Linux.
I am unable to Open local disk -c
when I try to open it – it says- Cannot Mount Volume.
PLease tell me a way I can get my data form Local Disk -C

the reason why u cannot see your partition in Windows is because you do not have the right to mount windows partition, besides Ubuntu uses the sudo command instead of the traditional su (superuser) command and that limits what u can do.

there are better linux than Ubuntu on the market but go to the Ubuntu forums and ask how to change permission for volumes and users.

I had the same problem that you have. I had to go and buy another XP program to get my computer started again. I was lucky to find someones used one with cost me around $20. Once I reloaded the XP program I was able to get my files. REMEMBER TO BACK UP ALL YOUR FILES BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE.

I would verify that you are trying to mount the drive as NTFS if that is the way the drive was formatted. I am not sure about Ubuntu-Linux, but some flavors and older linux operating systems do not have the ability to mount NTFS. Assuming you can still get it for free you may want to get a copy of Helix, bootable CD. You can also try putting the drive in an enclosure
