How do I prevent file recovery of my hard disc drive?

I mean, I know already about file shredders,file recovery but what about already deleted files? What are some utilities to cleat it? I would also like one that’s free and allows for more than one method. (e.g. Gutmann,DoD,etc.)

Try actually recovering all your old kiddy porn and shreeding everything that gets recovered?
