Data recovery in your case is very easy just download the demo version of data recovery software from internet and then connect the corrupted drive to another and use the software to check the recoverable files

  2. Depends on the nature of the crash. If the disk still spins and is accessible you can attach it as a slave or via a usb device and simply copy across or use something like getdataback from runtime software.

If the drive doesnt spin then you will need the services of a specialist company who should be able to retrieve something from it.

  4. It depends on what the problem is with the hard drive. If the heads are broken for example, using it in any way will only damage the hard drive more and will make a full recovery not possible. In this case a donor hard drive will need to be used for its heads. You cannot do this at an office or at home, it will need to be done in a special, dust free laboratory. If a piece of a platter is loose for example, using the hard drive in any way can also only damage it more as the loose piece will float around, hit the heads, et cetera. Again, recovery will need to be performed in a professional laboratory. The data will be recovered by copying the contents of the drive sector by sector to another medium. Costs for such recovery are high and I advise you to discuss costs with your customer beforehand. Also make sure to use a respected laboratory, one which works on a no cure no pay basis and agree on a price. For 300GB for example a price of $600 is not uncommon. Companies which charge only $50 for example should not be trusted; they will simply connect the hard drive to a computer and try to access it normally, by using software such as Recuva, which is free of charge, or by using professional, paid software, but by recovering data this way, the hard drive will only damage more and more and before all data can be recovered, the hard drive will die permanently. Do not trust individuals with the recovery of your data, only trust professional recovery centres. I work as an IT security consultant. I have done many security projects worldwide for governments and large multinationals. Some projects involved computer forensics and I have learned only to rely on professional recovery experts, as normal IT personnel will only make the problem worse and will make a full recovery impossible. If the costs do not weigh up to the data which might be lost, then do not perform a recovery. Try some free software yourself such as Recuva instead and save the money. Explain your customer the need for centralized storage and backup solutions. Good luck!

  5. Don’t have access to a second computer for doing as you please? This method will be ideal, then. You’ll need to get temporary access to a computer with Internet and a DVD burner. Download a Linux LiveCD – Damn Small Linux is the smallest, but also has issues mounting hard drives. The most simple for an average computer user would be Puppy Linux. It has a larger file size, but should recognize your drive.

Burn the Live CD ISO to a CD and insert it into your computer (the one with the crashed hard drive). Restart the computer and when it the computer logo appears, press F2 (or whatever key for your system) to enter BIOS. Change the boot sequence to CD first, Save and then Exit.

The Live CD will start, simply follow the directions on the screen–don’t worry, nothing is being done to your hard drive. The OS will start, and you should see your hard drive mounted on the desktop–something like "60GB", etc. Plug in a second drive and copy and paste the folders over.
