Ubuntu (linux) HDD Recovery?

I used to have a ubuntu pc but the MB broke, i took the HDD and need the data, i have a windows pc now, and i would switch HDDs’ but the PC’s are totally different, the ubuntu came off of a AMD 3200 and the Micrsoft Winxp i have now has (Dell)Intel running it.

My question is how do i resolve my problem without losing any data or buy another AMD 3200? so that i may retrieve the data?

thx and please help

I usually use SystemResuceCD, which is a Linux Live CD that contains a number of tools for fixing and recovering data.

You would need to boot the Live CD, mount the hard drive, and then you could copy the files to a USB or wherever you wanted on your computer. If you want to copy it to your Windows Partition, you would also have to mount your windows hard drive.

  1. I understand the problem as; you have a HDD with a ubuntu install but only have a windows computer, and want to get the files off the ubuntu HDD.
If the ubuntu HDD is not attached (either inside via internal cables or externally via usb), you need to attach it to the windows computer.
You can use your original ubuntu install cd as a live-cd (does not make any changes to your computer); do NOT install ubuntu, and when you are at the ubuntu desktop having used ubuntu you will be able to navigate to the ubuntu HDD via Konqueror, and copy the files to a flash drive or a new folder on the windows HDD.
Ubuntu programs will not work on windows so it is a waste of time to try to copy programs. You can only use music, pictures, text files, videos, etc, on windows.
If you do not have the old ubuntu cd you can download and burn a new one. It would be quicker to download and burn a smaller linux distro like DSL linux or knoppix. (only 50 -100 mbs). But the smaller distros probably will not have konqueror and you will have to use the command line to navigate and copy the files. If you do not use the command line in linux I would suggest that you get a new version of ubuntu.
It is possible to install linux on a flash drive but that will take extra steps and has more complications. Quick and dirty is to burn a new cd.
    Good luck
