how can i retrieve the files off my sata raid hd that won’t boot into windows xp or windows recovery?

I cannot login to Win XP because it says a system/file is missing. It won’t let me get into Windows recovery mode using the WinXP install CD either (when i try it asks to select a hard drive and then doesn’t do anything).

I have tried using knoppix linux live cd to retrieve the files of the hard drive, however it wont let me open the hd (i have tried to mount it via the terminal as well but no luck there either). I have heard that knoppix does not support SATA (raid) hard drives so this would explain why that doesn’t work.

Im pretty sure the hard drive is ok (it is picked up in the system check on start up and also in knoppix as a storage medium). Any ideas would be much appreciated!

– Knoppix does not work and i cannot change the hd to a slave because their are two that act as one (when one fails the other takes over) and there don’t seem to be jumper setting like on ATA drives.

– I have downloaded an ISO of slax linux but im not sure if that has SATA Raid hd support either.

I know there is a device that will let you connect your sata hard drive to a fully operational pc via usb cable. The way it works is by (in layman’s terms) turns your hard drive into a thumb drive through the sata to usb converter. I’ve used one before and it worked like a charm. Check out this site on ebay you can get the converter for as little as $8 or less:

http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=sata+to+usb&category0=

You may want to get one that has 2 usb ends attached to it or hot wire another usb end if you feel comfortable doing so. So you can be sure that you will have the extra power needed to run the hard drive. If you cant find one then using one that only has 1 usb end should work just as well.

If you dont want to spend the money you could always try making that hard drive a slave and putting it into another computer that supports sata and then pull of the information from there.

    download knoppix
boot from the cd then copy to external drive

  2. Try a BARTPE or Ultimate Boot CD. http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder and http://www.ubcd4win.com respectively. You need a copy of your OS on CD to use, and an ISO image burning program. (There are a lot of free ones out there.)

Did you try removing the drive and putting it in another computer as a non-boot drive? (not SATA0) That usually works for me. You can access and copy over the data.

  4. What type of RAID did you set up? If it is hardware, then when running the WinXP recovery console you may need to use the "F6" option to load third party disk drivers. This should allow the recovery console to be able to load the RAID and be able to select it.

If you setup a RAID 1 array, you may be able to go into your hardware and "break" the mirror. Then try removing one drive and accessing your files as a normal hard drive. You then can backup your files.

  5. make another partition on the HD using partition magic boot disk, format that partition, make the partition primary, install windows, boot your computer in new windows, transfer all the files to the new partition then you can either re-size the partition to make one or format the old partition and use it as extra storage.

  6. Set your Hard drive as a slave, use another hard drive with a operating system on it. Then open your slave drive and copy your folders over to another hard drive or cd/dvd.

  7. set as slave hard drive on another system this work for me
or you could use a IDE/SATA to USB 2.0 Hard Drive Adapter
