Which OS are you running (XP,Vista,Win7)?

Normally I would suggest using Ophcrack or the UBCD, but since you admit you are not the most computer savvy I would suggest finding someone that is, not that it can't be done with limited knowledge, but the risk involved with the procedure outweighs the benefits for someone that is not used to doing these types of things.

And DO NOT use cain and able, I have seen more people who have turned their computers into bricks by using that software than have successfully accomplished anything. The person who suggested it is obviously a script kiddie.

But, this is not the time nor the place for that rant.

Your best bet is to take it to either a computer repair shop, or if you know someone that has a good understanding of how computers work take it to them and let them run the password recovery utilities. There is still a risk, but it will be a managed one.
References :
SysAdmin, Software Developer, CCNA Certified, CEH Certified
