Try this and see if this will help: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-22_11-5928902.html , you will need to acquire that recovery cd from HP and create an image of the cd from someone else's computer using IMGBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ , then youll need a virtual drive drive to mount the OS: http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html , that will make the image act like the cd without really using the cd to create a USB boot OS to repair the original. Just follow the instructions of the first article I sent. The reason I give this long winded route is so that you can use the image more than once if necessary that and you have some extra tools to mess around with if you need to make a recovery USB drive rather than a full blown OS on the drive itself.
References :
Yes, you can make a USB BOOTABLE. So you can put any OS disc on any USB and boot from it. I am not 100% sure of the process, but i've done it before. Google the process. I know its not that hard to do. Then when you want to boot from it, have it plugged in of course and when you boot up your pc hit F12 and choose the USB.

that should be it!

Good luck
